File Preparation Specifications

Checkers Custom Signs uses a variety of design software, including Corel and Adobe Creative Suites, and we can accept many file types. However, the software used to create the file and file type should depend on the product being produced and production method. To eliminate potential errors during the production process, we ask that you submit your files using the following guidelines.

General Guidelines

When possible, create your design at full size (100%).
When using spot colors, assign PMS colors in a CMYK* workspace.

Vector Files

Vector graphics (line art) are created using design software, such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. They are generally used for sign making, screen printing, embossing and die cutting. These files should not contain halftones or blends (spot colors only).
Vector files should be supplied at full size in Adobe Illustrator EPS or PDF format, or Corel Draw CDR or CMX format. All strokes/outlines need to be converted to objects or shapes. Any fonts should be converted to curves or outlines. Raster images or blends should not be included in these types of files.

Raster Files

Raster graphics (bitmaps) are created using design software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint. They are generally used for digital and full color inkjet printing, and some embroidery and garment printing. These files can contain halftones, photographic images, and blends.
Raster files should be supplied as a flattened TIF file at the appropriate size and resolution which depends on the product and its intended use. Please refer to the following guidelines for the appropriate resolution or D.P.I.

Close viewing distance, stationery objects viewed at less than 10 feet - 100 d.p.i. at full size or at the appropriate scale.

Mid-range viewing, viewed at more than 10 feet but less than 50 feet or moving objects (vehicles) - 75 d.p.i. at full size or at the appropriate scale.

Long distance viewing, viewed at more than 50 feet - as low as 25 full size or at the appropriate scale.

NOTE: The file size of some completed designs can become quite large. A typical photographic design for a 10 foot trade show display, trailer graphic or billboard can reach 400 megabytes or more.
If you are concerned about matching a specific color in your artwork, please specify the PMS colors used in the design. Also, feel free to request a match print if you feel it may be necessary.
If you should have any additional questions about file preparation or color matching, please don't hesitate to contact us.

*I in some circumstances, a RGB workspace and images can be used in your design. However, this should be limited to web design, some inkjet printing and high-end, continuous tone RGB laser imaging.
When working in a RGB colorspace, be sure to keep or convert all PMS colors and/or imported graphics to RGB. Mixing and matching RGB and CMYK graphic within the same design will likely cause unexpected color shifts.
